Dry Shampoo

I have become increasingly aware over the span of my natural journey, there are toxins e v e r y w h e r e…what we eat, what we drink, what we breathe, what we use on our skin, and even what we use on our hair. The products that we use on our hair and scalp will get into our pores and into our bloodstream. So, it is incredibly important for us to be aware of what we are using for our daily self-care routines. Many products on the market fall WAY short of “safe” and the harmful ingredients build up in the body causing much unaware harm.

Anyone else LOVE a good dry shampoo? I have been using this particular recipe since about 2019 or so, and I love how easy and quick it is. It utilizes a few essential oils to help promote hair growth and strength, as well as helping to keep the scalp clean and healthy. AND this is the exact recipe I use for my mattifying powder after applying my makeup too. Amazing! Oh and don’t forget what great gifts these would make for your family & friends.

Check out how easy it is to make…

I usually like to start my day using dry shampoo because my hair (and skin) tend to be on the more oily side. I use it once in the morning and it keeps the oil at bay the rest of the day (use again throughout the day if needed). I like to apply mine with a fluffy makeup brush, or there are also brushes specifically for dry shampoo. Fun tip for ya, I like to dip the top of the brush into the dry shampoo and then use the lid of the jar as a plate to tap off any excess before applying. Works great!

I typically will start applying the dry shampoo at the base of the skull and work my way around the head about 3 times on the sides and thrn on top (re-dip as needed). I’ll then flip my head over to blend it all in with my fingertips. If you don’t blend enough you may get a comment like, “you’re graying well”…I may or may not have received that comment from my husband before, ha ha. After I’m done with my hair, I like to use the brush to dab on my face as a mattifying powder!

Arrowroot powder/flour is an ideal ingredient for this kind of recipe. The purpose of the arrowroot is to absorb excess oil and moisture without clogging pores or damaging hair. I find that it also does a great job at providing volume to the hair. This recipe calls for essential oils, of course, for their amazing benefits to the integumentary system — hair & skin. The combination that I have found most helpful for me is Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Tea Tree, and Rosemary.

Tips & Tricks

  • Cacao powder (or cocoa) can be used to darken the mixture for darker hair. I typically start with 1/2 tbsp and add more as desired. For myself, I use about 1/2-1 tbsp cacao powder.

  • Be sure to mix slowly and thoroughly before placing in storage jar.

  • Use a glass jar when storing anything that contains essential oils.

  • Hope you love it as much as I do! Enjoy!
